Mr. Machini Motloung is a distinguished South African attorney, legal administrator, and leader in the legal profession, with over two decades of experience in litigation, legal management, governance, and access to justice. He is widely recognised for his contributions to the transformation of the legal profession and the promotion of constitutional democracy in South Africa.
He obtained his B Proc degree from the University of Durban-Westville (now part of the University of KwaZulu-Natal), completed executive leadership studies through the Wits Business School, and pursued a Master’s degree in Human Rights at the University of the Free State. He was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africain 2001 and obtained Right of Appearance in the High Court
in 2004. He also serves as a Commissioner of the Small Claims Court.
Mr. Motloung joined Legal Aid South Africa in March 2003, where he served for twenty years in various senior leadership positions. His responsibilities included serving as Principal Attorney, Justice Centre Executive, Provincial Legal Manager for the Free State and
North West, and ultimately Head of Office in Bloemfontein. During his tenure, he managed complex civil and criminal litigation, supervised legal practitioners, and played a significant role in improving access to justice for indigent communities.
In 2023, he established Machini Motloung Inc. Attorneys, a boutique law firm specialising in commercial and corporate law, public and administrative law, civil litigation, sports and entertainment law, and cyber and social media law. The firm serves both individual and corporate clients within South Africa and internationally.
Beyond private practice, Mr. Motloung has held numerous leadership and governance positions within the legal profession. He served as Deputy President and later President of the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL), advocating for the transformation of the legal profession and the advancement of constitutional values. In 2026, he was elected President of the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA), where he continues to provide strategic leadership to the attorneys’ profession nationwide.
His professional service extends to several public and community institutions. He has served as Chairperson of the Pelonomi Hospital Board, Legal and Governance Director of the Lilyvale Estate Homeowners Association, adviser to community organisations, and a member of various disciplinary and governance committees within the legal profession. He has also participated extensively in public legal education through television and radio, providing legal commentary on significant constitutional and criminal law matters.
Throughout his career, Mr. Motloung has received several professional awards, including Legal Aid South Africa Manager of the Year awards and recognition for leadership excellence. He has successfully managed numerous high-profile matters involving public interest litigation, university disciplinary proceedings, corruption prosecutions, and constitutional disputes, earning a reputation for integrity, professionalism, and a steadfast commitment to justice.
