Mr. Mvuzo Notyesi is a distinguished South African attorney, human rights lawyer, and legal leader with more than 25 years of experience in private practice, professional governance, legal education, and constitutional advocacy. He is the founder and director of Mvuzo Notyesi Incorporated, a law firm based in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, where he has practised since his admission as an attorney in 1999.
His practice focuses on High Court litigation in both civil and criminal matters, with particular expertise in constitutional and administrative law.
Mr. Notyesi obtained both his BProc and LLB degrees from the University of Transkei (now Walter Sisulu University). After completing his articles of clerkship and the Law Society of South Africa’s School for Legal
Practice in East London, he was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 1999. Since then, he has built a respected legal practice while earning recognition as a committed advocate for human rights, ethical legal practice, and access to justice.
Throughout his career, Mr. Notyesi has played a prominent leadership role within the Law
Society of South Africa (LSSA). He has served as a Council Member, Management Committee Member, Co-Chairperson, and subsequently President of the LSSA, providing strategic leadership during a significant period of transformation within the attorneys’ profession following the implementation of the Legal Practice Act. He has also previously served as Vice-President and Acting President of the Cape Law Society.
Mr. Notyesi has made a significant contribution to South Africa’s justice system through public service. He has served as the Law Society of South Africa’s representative on the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), participating in the process of judicial appointments and the promotion of judicial independence. He has also served as a Board Member of Legal Aid South Africa, contributing to the enhancement of legal aid services and access to justice for vulnerable communities.
A committed educator and mentor, Mr. Notyesi has lectured part-time at the University of Transkei and has served as an instructor at the LSSA School for Legal Practice in East London. He is also an examiner for the Attorneys’ Admission Examinations, playing an important role in the education and assessment of aspiring legal practitioners. His passion for developing future generations of lawyers has made him a respected mentor within the profession.
Mr. Notyesi has also demonstrated a deep commitment to social upliftment through the Notyesi Foundation, where he serves as Chairperson. The Foundation provides bursaries and educational support to disadvantaged students, reflecting his belief that education is a powerful instrument for social and economic transformation.
Within the National Association of Democratic Lawyers (NADEL), Mr. Notyesi has held several senior leadership positions, including National President and, more recently, Inaugural National Chairperson following the Association’s governance restructuring. Under his leadership, NADEL has continued to champion constitutional democracy, transformation of the legal profession, access to justice, judicial independence, and the protection of human rights.
Widely respected for his integrity, leadership, and unwavering commitment to justice, Mr. Mvuzo Notyesi continues to make a profound contribution to South Africa’s legal profession through his legal practice, public service, legal education, and leadership in professional organisations.
